There’s no amount of wall decor or art that can make a home feel more personal than family portraits. As families grow and change, pictures remain and remind the family members how much they mean to one another. That is why I often incorporate gallery walls in my clients homes so that their space reflects their personality and memories.
After my son was born, it was important to me that we have professional portraits taken of our new family. I wanted someone to capture the joy and pride we felt as we held our newborn son and be reminded of that time for years to come by displaying them in a gallery wall. After having such a great experience, I thought I’d share our gallery wall, along with reasons why professional portraits are a great way to decorate your home and tips on how to get it right!

Why Family Portraits?
Family portraits show the family in their best light and highlight how happy everyone is together. They also remind the family, especially the littles, that this is where they belong… these are their people, their home, and their safe space. There are a number of studies that show the psychological benefits of having portraits of both family and children in the home. I know I enjoyed having portraits of my family around the house while growing up. Every time I looked at them I’d recall the day they were taken. So many special memories that we might have forgotten, had we not had our pictures to remind us.
Apart from the memories and joy they bring, portraits also look great mixed in home decor. Whether its a gallery wall along the hallway or a focal point above the fireplace, they demand attention and draw peoples interest.
Hire a Professional
There’s always that friend or family member who would be happy to take the pictures for us. And most of the time, they aren’t half bad? But, let me tell you from experience, these portraits would not look ANYTHING close to this if they weren’t taken by a professional. You’d never know it, but our photoshoot fell on a dark and stormy day where the lighting was AWFULL! I mean, the room was so dark you could barely see anything. Luckily our photographer came with a truck load of equipment and was able to brighten up the room as if it was a sunny morning. I was amazed when I saw how great the pictures turned out.
When you hire a professional photographer, you’re getting years of experience and creativity, the highest quality of camera and equipment, and on top of that, photo editing skills that make you look flawless. Portraits truly are an investment that will bring joy for years to come.
Get it Right
When it comes to picking out clothing, take cues from the colors in the room. Try taking inspiration from the colors in the accessories (like fabric or pillows) and adding them to the portraits so that everything blends well once displayed. Keep clothing mostly neutral and let those pops of subtle color brings life to the image. For ours we stayed with neutral colors that matched the space, but needed dark enough clothing so we wouldn’t get lost on our white bedding. The background is important also, as you don’t want anything too busy that can be distracting from the main focus (you)!
Our gallery wall is in our bedroom where I get to see it every morning. There’s no art that can make me as happy as I am when I look at my little family. When I see our precious boy at just 6 weeks old, I’m reminded at how fast they grow and in just a blink of an eye, they change. I’m so grateful to Hobbs Studio for capturing such a wonderful time in our lives and look forward to our next photoshoot together. They were so great to work with and made it such an awesome experience!
