We’re loving the new house and slowly making it our home, one room at a time. If you haven’t been following along, we bought a Cape Cod style home earlier this year and have been in the process of updating it. So far I’ve shared the boys room, dining room, and family room, and today I’m sharing the formal living room.
One of the things I was most attracted to about our new house was the traditional floor plan. While I appreciate an open concept, I’m drawn to the idea of separate spaces, especially now that we have little ones. It’s nice to have a space for family time and playing, while also having a quiet place to work or a more elegant space to entertain. The formal living room is my “pretty room” where I don’t have to worry about toy storage or baby proofing (for the most part). I kept it very traditional, but brought in plenty of personality with fun colors and patterns.
Follow along as I walk you through all the decorating details, and don’t forget to stay tuned till the end for the before and after pictures!

My favorite piece, and the inspiration behind this space, is the vintage sofa. It’s covered in a stunning silk chinoiserie upholstery with shades of green and soft pink, creating a beautiful focal point for the space. I complimented it with gold leaf accents like the Uttermost coffee table with a mirrored top for an elegant feel. Uttermost is one of my go-to home decor sources and I am always impressed with their quality and affordable prices. A big thank you to them for providing this table to be showcased in today’s tour!
I went with a neutral, woven sisal rug with geometric pattern from Safavieh. It’s textured detail balances perfectly with the space, while not being too busy in comparison with the sofa. My friends at Safavieh were gracious enough to send the rug to be included in the design.
I’m a huge fan of sunburst mirrors. They are so timeless and instantly bring glamour to a space. This gorgeous mirror by Eicholtz is no longer available, but I rounded up some similar options for you to browse through below!
The walls, ceiling, and trim are painted in Alabaster by Sherwin Williams. I wanted to keep the paint neutral so the color in the drapery and upholstery would take center stage. The white walls really opened up the space and gave it the light and bright feel I was going for.
Plug in wall sconces are an easy option when there’s no overhead lighting. These brass sconces from Visual Comfort are timeless and balanced perfectly alongside the sunburst mirror.
A variety of patterns keeps the space playful. The buffalo check pleated table skirt is from Ballards and the pink geometric pillows were a steal on Overstock. I had fun breaking out of my usual comfort zone and mixing different prints.
These dupioni silk drapes from Ballards are EVERYTHING. I can’t get enough of them! The soft, spa green tone pairs beautifully alongside the sofa and creates a soft contrast with the blush pink.
The coffee table floral arrangement is made up of English Roses and a brass cachepot I found on facebook marketplace. I stacked some of my favorite design books by Suzanne Kasler and Alexa Hampton. And no coffee table is complete without a yummy smelling candle.

I wanted to make this room personal with family pictures and my sons silhouette portrait. My grandmother passed down the rose painted bowl and it’s always been such a special piece, so I was excited to display it.
Now that you’ve seen the completed space, let’s take a peak at what it looked like BEFORE I got my hands on it…
Fun transformation, right?? I love how the space turned out and I hope you do too. If there’s something you had your eye on, you can shop the look below by clicking on the image!
